Story of the Sea
Havsaga is a fairy tale and narrative simulator that explores ecological ethics in the context of an inverted settlement game. Based on a Swedish origin story, the Gutasaga, the game centers on a sentient island during a time of exploration by human beings. You play as Önetta (“Island of Night”), the gamespace itself, as settlers attempt to claim and colonize your dreamlike ecosystem. As they progress, the settlers compete with native creatures and write the story of their expanding culture onto the environment by erecting Scandinavian picture stones. How you respond to this act of claiming will determine the saga told by the storytellers among your native inhabitants: your gloom sirens. Gameplay emerges in how these two stories harmonize or conflict with each other.
